HYPOTHETICAL TERRITORY OWING ALLEGIANCE TO SAUL, c. 1035 B.C.

Saul was the last of the judges and the first of Israel's kings. Saul not only delivered Israel from the Philistine yoke, but also warred upon all the other surrounding enemies, and he “delivered Israel out of the hands of those who plundered them'' (1 Sam 14:48). In the account of the reign of Saul’s son Eshbaal (Ishbosheth – 2 Sam 2:9), the regions of his kingdom are listed as the five areas of “all Israel.” These are the regions of dense Israelite settlement: Gilead in Transjordan; the Geshurites (incorrectly transmitted as Ashurites) in Galilee; the plain of Jezreel (named after the major city of Issachar); Ephraim in the central hill country, and Benjamin. To these must be added Judah, over which Saul had also extended his rule, but which fell to David “in the days of Eshbaal.”
