The assassination of Eshbaal, the conquest of Jerusalem and the subsequent Philistine wars
THE ASSASSINATION OF ESHBAAL, THE CONQUEST OF JERUSALEM AND THE SUBSEQUENT PHILISTINE WARS, c. 1010 B.C.
The tragic deaths of Abner and Eshbaal led to David’s kingship over Israel and Judah. Abner was slain by Joab at Hebron. Eshbaal was assassinated by two of his officers from the Rimmon clan of Beeroth. The latter had fled to Gittaim, probably to escape persecution by Saul (2 Sam 4:1–3). Hence, Gittaim is also known as Gath-rimmon.
