"This is a unique book. It seems to me that Ada Yardeni is the only author who is qualified to write a book based on both the history of the Hebrew script from its earliest beginnings and her deep knowledge of the modern Hebrew letter. It houses under one roof two seemingly remote disciplines, but the palaeography and the graphics of the letter are, in fact, two sides of one and the same coin." - Joseph Naveh, Professor of Semitic Epigraphy and Palaeography, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
"Hebrew palaeography has until now been conducted in certain directions, focusing on specific subjects, mainly on correcting the readings of ancient inscriptions in order to decipher their contents. Some of the studies dealt with manuscripts in which the letter-forms testify to the evolution of the Hebrew script, such as the Dead Sea Scrolls. In the scientific literature, however, only single and relatively short surveys exist which deal with epochs later than the Second Temple period, and virtually all of them limit themselves to specific issues.
"This book breaks through almost all fences within which Hebrew palaeography has been confined until now. It starts at the beginning, forges through the Second Temple period and deals with all the periods following it. The shapes of the letters and their development are documented, described and analyzed. The survey also includes various new scripts.
"The author, a known scholar in the field of Semitic palaeography and a graphic artist, has also designed modern typefaces. The fact that she is exceptionally well-versed in two complementary domains – research and experience – singles out this book." - Dan Bahat, District Archaeologist, Jerusalem
"The history of the Hebrew script is an important chapter in the history of the people of the Book. It is doubtful if there is today anyone who is better qualified than Ada Yardeni for telling the story of the Hebrew script. The author embodies in her personality a rare combination of a successful scholar and a talented graphic artist. This book is the fruit of diligent study, rare technical know-how and a highly-developed aesthetic sense." - Magen Broshi, Curator of the Shrine of the Book, The Israel Museum, Jerusalem
The Book of Hebrew Script: History, Palaeography, Script Styles, Calligraphy & Design by Ada Yardeni (an expert graphic artist and calligrapher, and who holds a doctorate in ancient Semitic language, as well as being an authority in palaeography, and epigraphy) is an outstanding and seminal 355-page illustrated reference to the evolution of Hebrew script down through the centuries. Filled from cover to cover with numerous examples of script drawn from different eras of history, and offering an extensive discourse concerning both profound and subtle variations in Hebrew script, The Book of Hebrew Script is a core resource for professional and academic Hebrew Language Studies collections. - Midwest Book Review
