The Land of Canaan during the reign of Ramesses II, according to Papyrus Anastasi I, before 1270 B.C.
THE LAND OF CANAAN DURING THE REIGN OF RAMESSES II, BEFORE 1270 B.C.
After the near defeat at Kedesh, Ramesses was forced to deal with unrest in Canaan. A Luxor relief dated to his eighth year (1271 B.C.) depicts his action against several towns in Galilee and Amurru. Another victory stele at Nahr el-Kelb dates to year ten (1269 B.C.). One topographical list follows an itinerary along the coast and an undated relief shows a siege of Acco. There are also recorded activities in the south and east, as far as the land of Moab and the mountain of Seir. Ramesses often boasts of his victories over the Shasu, some of which he lists by tribal or geographical names. Beginning with Seti I, there was a (seasonal?) Egyptian mining project in the copper-rich wadi at Timna that continued to flourish into the days of the twentieth dynasty. Some of the labor force was local as attested by the presence of the so-called Midianite pottery from southern Transjordan.
