The campaign of Alexander to the conquest of Tyre

THE CAMPAIGN OF ALEXANDER TO THE CONQUEST OF TYRE, JULY 332 B.C.

The period of Persian domination of the Near East and of the Levant in particular came to an abrupt end with the remarkable campaign of Alexander, son of Philip, king of Macedonia. His conquest of Anatolia, the Levant, Egypt, Mesopotamia and the land of Persia up to the border of India earned him the title Alexander the Great. In 334 B.C. Alexander marched his army of 35,000 men into Asia to challenge the Persians and fulfill his father Philip's pledge, “to avenge Greece by attacking Persia.” He passed from Europe to Asia at the Hellespont.
