THE EARLY CAMPAIGNS OF AMENHOTEP II, 1450 and 1445 BCE
Throughout the fifteenth, fourteenth and thirteenth centuries, Egyptian rule over Canaan was relatively stable, especially since the decisive victory by Thutmose III in his first campaign. Nevertheless, there were occasional problems. The main centers of Egyptian administration seem to have been Gaza in the south, Sumur on the northern coast and Kumidi (Komidi) in the Lebanese Beqa` Valley. In addition, other key towns like the seaports of Joppa in the south and Ullasa in the north and strong points on major crossroads such as Beth-shean were also Egyptian bases. Just as the Canaanites had found the terrain beside Megiddo suitable for mustering their forces, so the Egyptians also favored that area as a place to maintain a strong military presence.
