THE FIRST OFFICIAL CAMPAIGN OF THUTMOSE III, 1482 BCE
Thutmose III (1504–1450), grandson of Thutmose I, was the most energetic of the eighteenth dynasty kings. Even during the co-regency with his mother-in-law, Hatshepsut (1503–1483), he had conducted at least one campaign to Nubia and probably at least one to Retenu where he may have had to reconquer Gaza. When his mother-in-law died, it may have been the signal for a Mitanni-inspired revolt in Retenu. The scribes began to number Thutmose III's campaigns from the time he became sole ruler. His first campaign was aimed at restoring Egyptian control over the southern Levant.
