THE MIGRATION OF THE SEA PEOPLES, 1174 B.C.

Peoples from the Aegean region, Greeks and other Indo-Europeans, had been in contact by maritime trade with Egypt and the Levant from at least the Middle Bronze Age. Ships from Keftiu (=Caphtor) had brought goods to Egypt during the eighteenth dynasty and during the Amarna period; Lukku (Lycians) had threatened the kingdom of Alashia (on Cyprus). Sherdanu mercenaries (from the Sardis region) had served in Egyptian garrisons in Canaan and fought under Ramesses II at the battle of Kedesh, while Lukku, Dardanians and other western Asiatics of similar origin fought for the Hittites. Pharaoh Merneptah repelled an invasion of Libyans supported by several Aegean peoples, including the Akawasha (Achaeans?), the Shekelesh and the Tursha (Tyrsenoi, ancestors of the Etruscans?).
