THE TRAVELS OF WENAMON, Early 11th, Century BCE

Though direct evidence is lacking from the eleventh century BCE, it is obvious from the later documentation that the cities on the Lebanese coast did not suffer directly from the incursions of the Aegean peoples that occurred during the twelfth century BCE. All of the city-states along the coast, e.g. Byblos, Beirut, Sidon and Tyre, are found in the tenth and ninth centuries BCE flourishing and enjoying relations with Egypt and the west as well as the Levantine hinterland. They have maintained their language and religious culture intact from the Bronze Age and they are aware of their identity as Canaanites. Under the last ruler of Dynasty XX, Ramesses XI, an official named Wenamon was sent by Herihor, the high priest of Amon at Karnak, to Lebanon to buy lumber for repairing the sacred bark of Amon in No-amon (Thebes).
