In the late twelfth century B.C., Syria witnessed the energetic campaigns of a new and vigorous Assyrian monarch, Tiglath-pileser I. The first four years, from his succession year to his third regnal year, were spent in campaigns to the north and northeast, warding off threats from the Mushku and peoples of Nairi land west of Lake Van. Many of the population groups there were defeated, subjugated and made subject of heavy tribute. The neighboring Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar I, had successfully punished the Elamites and restored the plundered statue of Marduk, etc., so the Assyrians could concentrate their energies elsewhere.
