Brother of Judah Maccabee. In the battle of Beth Zechariah, southwest of Jerusalem, he plunged a spear into an elephant he thought was carrying the Syrian ruler Antiochus V Eupator and was crushed to death when the animal fell on him (I Macc. 6:43–46).
